Michiko To Hatchin

Hana is a nine-year-old girl who lives in constant fear of her abusive family; Michiko is a sexy woman who has just done the unthinkable: broken out of the impenetrable Diamandra Penitentiary. After Hana is whisked away by Michiko, who claims to be her mother, the duo sets forth on a high octane ride towards freedom. In the streets of Brazil and aboard Michiko's motorcycle, Hana and Michiko will look for Hana's long lost father, try to learn to co-exist and get along together, and stay one step ahead of the police and afro-clad Atsuko. You will instantly notice the spunky theme of this anime, the Brazilian style and that jazzy music. This anime shows a majority of backstreet gangsters, mafia, and all that. The animation is good, using soft lines and colors to suite the mood it is trying to bring. Jazzy music really does freshen things up. Well, at least in the first 10 episodes. :p

After watching the first 3 episodes, I was thinking how it felt like a children’s anime to me. With random violence and some gangster action going around, nothing mind boggling. Then all of a sudden episode 4 hit me like a bomb. Showing the first “real” blood shed and suddenly, you realize it’s not a children’s anime after all.

There are some side-stories although minimal, which happens during the search for Hatchin’s father. I wouldn’t really call it fillers, as they show how each event strengthens Michiko and Hatchin’s bond.

However, sometimes while watching the anime, I get a little lost. I would think “What was this anime about again?” There is either too much going on at the same time or nothing going on at all. And this made the story seem to go at a slouching pace. Only after episode 9 did I started enjoying the anime as it felt for the brief moment that they were back on track. I don’t think that the anime is bad, it’s just now my cup of tea.
