Ga-Rei-Zero

Kagura and Yomi are two girls who have a bond that cannot be broken. While once they fought side by side against the supernatural forces that threaten the planet, fate had something different in store for these star-crossed companions. Yet to understand the present, one must first experience the past – a time before Kagura’s involvement with the Supernatural Disaster Prevention Agency. Always cheery and good-natured to a fault, the young Kagura first meets Yomi when she is invited into her home. Over time, the two battle malicious spirits and grow closer together – but soon, more terrifying foes begin to reveal themselves. A swarm of glowing blue butterflies and a mysterious stone are harbingers of darker things to come, and one thing’s for sure: Kagura and Yomi will never be the same. Source: Anime-planet.com

After watching the first 2 episodes, I was immediately attracted to it as Ga-Rei-Zero really did start its series with a Bang! The first 2 episodes were filled with battles. The battle scenes weren’t superb in terms of effects or anything like that, but I found it to be very intense.

After the first 2 episodes however, things get slowed down as the anime starts showing the past, as to how the present (in the first 2 episode) ended up as it is. The pace settles down as it layouts the relationship between each characters, how it developed and how it ended up this way. After that, you probably won’t see any intense battles till the last few episodes.

The color combination was well used. Dark colors during battle or fighting specters (evil spirits) and bright during funny scenes or during normal day to day routines. Don’t get thrown off by the first episode’s dark atmosphere though. By episode 3, it will brighten up.

Although the ending didn’t really settle well with me, it is still a proper ending none-the-less (there’s a hint here :p). Warning to all softies in advance, I did shed some tears as some parts during Ga-Rei-Zero is pretty heart crushing. So prepare yourselves!
